Mother Most Admirable

Despite being a cradle-Catholic, I only learned of Our Lady depicted as Mater Admirabilis a few years ago.  This is her story:

"In 1844, at the Trinita dei Monti convent in Rome, a French novice by the name of Pauline Perdrau received permission from the Mother Superior to paint a fresco of Our Lady.  She spent months painting working on the fresco.  Despite her effort, the image was not very good, and the Mother Superior covered it with a curtain to hide it.  Two years later, Pope Pius IX was visiting the convent, and out of curiosity drew back the curtain.  The painting had been transformed and beautiful.  He exclaimed “Mater Admirabilis!,” which means “Mother Most Admirable!”  Word quickly spread, and many began a devotion to Mother Most Admirable.  Under this title, Our Lady began to grant favors and miracles, and the Feast of Mater Admirabilis is celebrated on October 20th.

Just tell her to SHUT UP.

Well, the babies' naptime is almost over, and I don't have time to write a long post today.  But I do have time to share a post from one of my favorite blogs, O My Family.

I love the point Allison makes about criticizing ourselves constructively.  I think that we are all far from perfect in different areas of our lives, and we always need to work on something.  But we can't beat ourselves up over our faults.  We must acknowledge our faults, seek God's forgiveness and help, and try again.

When the Stars Do Not Align

When you have your first baby, it seems that the most common advice people give you is the cliche' (but oh so true) "Sleep when the baby sleeps."

When you have two babies back-to-back, those same people seem to realize that you no longer have the luxury of sleeping when the baby sleeps, for you are also responsible for caring for an energetic toddler as well.  The advice becomes, "You've gotta get them on the same schedule!"

I'll admit that having Isabelle and Lacey on the same schedule helps immensely.  And most days, that's what I strive to do.  Because if I can get them to sleep at the same time, I have the choice of uninterrupted showering, cleaning house, reading, knitting, taking a nap, and even blogging!  (And judging by the scarcity of my posts over the last several months, I'm sure you can see that blogging hasn't been high on my list lately).  It's absolutely true that when the stars align and you have both babies sleeping, you can get a lot done.

Yesterday, the stars did not align.  Lacey took a good, long morning nap, and Isabelle wasn't ready for a nap until mid-afternoon.  But instead of being frustrated, I chose to see it as an opportunity to spend some much-needed quality one-on-one time with each of the girls.  Instead of "Me" time, I got to have "Momma-and-Isabelle" time and "Momma-and-Lacey" time.  Isabelle helped me do some chores and fold clothes while Lacey napped, and me and Lacey practiced eating from a spoon and walking while Isabelle napped.  And during those times, neither had to compete for my attention.  It was exhausting, but wonderful.

Sometimes the stars align and things work out perfectly.  But sometimes when the stars to not align, things can work out better.  I forget that a lot.  And I think yesterday, God reminded me that I cannot control the stars.  But I can control myself, and choose to do God's will anyway.  I may not have had time to read, knit, watch a movie, or even clean my bathroom.  But God provided me with all the time I needed to do His will, and what more could I ask for?

Thoughts on Sick Babies from a Thankful Momma

Well we had a rough weekend.  It started Thursday afternoon when I went to get Isabelle from her nap, and she was burning up and running a fever of 102.something (I can't quite remember).  She had a runny nose and was acting so lethargic and pitiful.  Ariel came with me and we brought her into the after-hours clinic, where we waited for two and a half hours - the doctor tested her for flu and strep, both came back negative.

Jason Evert - Why Modesty?

I just watched this REALLY good video on modesty today. Already shared it on facebook, so I thought I'd post it here too!

In the video, Jason Evert talks about modesty from a guy's perspective. I love how he talks about not only the need for modesty, but the need for women to understand how men think! It's really interesting, please watch and tell me what you think!

By the way, if you like this video, I'm sure you'd love this wonderful little book called Dressing with Dignity.  It's written by Colleen Hammond, a Catholic mom and former model.  It's a pretty short book, but it's amazing

God Must Read My Blog

It's funny how right after I write a big blog post venting about how difficult my life has been, I have a really good day.

Last night was rough.  I was hurting, coughing, had a headache, and terrible heartburn.  I didn't sleep well at all, and when the munchkin woke up at 7:30 in the morning, I thought it was going to be a rough day.

But it wasn't.  I had decided not to push myself to do any housework so that I could rest and take care of Isabelle and myself.  But for some reason, I had a good, steady supply of energy.  So I took care of the baby and did a good deal of housework.  Isabelle was so good today - she was playing by herself in her Jenny Jump while I was cleaning the kitchen, and fell asleep in it!  It was SO cute.  After I put her to bed, she took a good nap while I did more housework and got ready to go swimming.  We got to Maw-Maw's late this afternoon and went swimming with Gregory and Ariel, later joined by Blake, Catherine, and Ethan.  Maw-Maw had baked chicken with vegetables for dinner, and pie with ice cream for dessert!  We had a great time!

15 Reasons to Use NFP

Okay, so I stole this from my good friend Erin's blog, Humble Handmaid, but I think it's originally from Matthew Warner's blog entitled Fallible Blogma.  I thought it was very interesting, considering how most of the world seems to view our crazy Catholic version of "birth control."

Though NFP (if practiced correctly) is just as effective as the pill, it is NOT "Catholic birth control."  It's a natural way to achieve or delay a pregnancy (for serious reasons) through ecological breastfeeding and being aware of a wife's fertility.  Blake and I haven't had to practice any NFP for quite a while (we've been pregnant for most of our marriage, lol), but it's important to understand not only how to practice it, but why we practice it.  Couples practicing NFP are not using any artificial means of preventing conception or implantation, and are therefore open to God's will during the marital act.  A couple must prayerfully discern each month if they have serious reasons to postpone a pregnancy, and if they do, then they should abstain from sex during the fertile phase of the wife's cycle.  The couple learns to sacrifice their short-term pleasure for the long-term good of the family.  And if the couple finds that there is no serious reason to postpone pregnancy, they can even use NFP to achieve a pregnancy!

"But Who Do You Say that I Am?"

I've been reading these spiritual mediations I found online (at dailyscripture.net) for a few weeks now, and I absolutely love them.  They're not too long, but not too short either.  This is yesterday's meditation, which I tried to post yesterday but my internet stopped working:

What's Your Temperament?

A few months ago I went to 4 Marks.com and took their free temperament test.  I really like this test because it's pretty extensive and it gives you percentages on your temperament types (if you're more than one, that is).  4 Marks explains much better than I could why understanding your temperament is important:

Give and Take

This is one of my favorite songs by Catholic artist Danielle Rose, from her album Defining Beauty.  I love it because it reminds me that when things in life don't go the way we plan, it's an opportunity to grow closer to Christ.  I personally don't believe that God makes things go wrong in our lives, but I do believe that He desperately wants us to turn to Him in times of need!  And if we would just turn to God in our moments of weakness, He will give us strength and grace to endure whatever struggles life will bring.
